Gicleé prints, why are they a big deal?

If you’ve been browsing our gallery, you’ve likely seen the term “Giclée print” used to describe many of the fine art pieces on offer. But what exactly does that mean—and why is it considered the gold standard in art printing?

Let’s break it down.

What Is a Giclée Print?

The word Giclée (pronounced “zhee-clay”) comes from the French verb gicler, meaning "to spray." It refers to a high-resolution, fine art printing process that uses archival pigment-based inks and specialized printers to produce images with outstanding detail, color accuracy, and longevity.

Unlike standard digital or offset prints, Giclée prints are made with meticulous attention to detail, often using 12-color ink systems to achieve subtle tonal transitions and an incredibly rich color range. They’re typically printed on acid-free fine art papers or canvas, which are designed to resist yellowing and degradation over time.

Why Are Giclée Prints So Special?

1. Museum-Quality Reproduction
Giclée printing is trusted by professional artists, photographers, and galleries around the world. It captures even the subtlest details of the original artwork—whether it’s the texture of brushstrokes or the gradation in photographic shadows.

2. Archival Longevity
Giclée prints are made to last. When properly cared for, they can maintain their color and vibrancy for 100+ yearswithout noticeable fading. This makes them ideal for collectors who value long-term quality.

3. Rich, Accurate Color
Thanks to the use of pigment-based inks and a wide color gamut, Giclée prints reproduce colors with incredible fidelity. Whether it’s a soft pastel gradient or deep, saturated tones, the result is both true to the original and visually stunning.

4. Premium Paper & Materials
Not all paper is created equal. Giclée prints are produced on archival-grade papers or canvas—often 100% cotton rag or heavyweight textured stocks—that not only look beautiful but also help preserve the integrity of the print.

Why We Use Giclée Prints

At our studio, we believe that if art is worth sharing, it’s worth presenting in the best possible form. That’s why many of our works are offered as Giclée prints. This process ensures that every print meets the highest standards of craftsmanship—so you can enjoy art that’s not only beautiful but also built to last.

Whether you’re investing in your first print or adding to a growing collection, Giclée printing offers a level of quality that truly elevates the experience of living with art.

So What Are C-type Prints Then?

If you’ve explored our gallery, you might have noticed that some works are offered as C-type prints. While Giclée printing often gets a lot of the spotlight, C-type (or chromogenic) prints have a rich history and a unique visual quality all their own.

So, what exactly are they—and why might you want one on your wall?

What Is a C-type Print?

C-type, short for chromogenic type, is a traditional photographic printing process that has evolved into a high-end digital format. Unlike inkjet-based Giclée printing, C-type prints are created by exposing light-sensitive photographic paper(usually resin-coated or fibre-based) to laser or LED light, and then chemically developed—similar to how film photography works.

The result? A smooth, continuous-tone image with beautifully natural color transitions and a distinct photographic feel.

What Makes C-type Prints Special?

1. Photographic Authenticity
C-type prints offer a soft, almost luminous quality that’s hard to replicate. Because the image is developed within the paper rather than sitting on top of it, like ink, the finish is exceptionally smooth and clean—making it the preferred method for photographic work.

2. Rich, Continuous Tones
Where Giclée prints shine in texture and depth, C-types excel in subtle gradation and smooth color blending. Skin tones, skies, and shadows are especially well-rendered with C-type’s continuous-tone process.

3. Professional Lab Finish
C-type prints are produced in professional darkroom-style labs using advanced digital exposure systems. They’re often finished with a choice of matte, gloss, or satin coatings, and can be mounted for sleek, contemporary presentation.

4. Proven Archival Quality
Modern C-type prints, especially when produced on papers like Fuji Crystal Archive or Kodak Endura, offer excellent archival stability—lasting several decades under proper conditions without fading.

Why We Offer C-type Prints

Some artworks just call for that clean, photographic finish—and when they do, C-type printing is our go-to. It’s especially well-suited for photography, minimalist compositions, and tonal work where smoothness and subtlety are key.

Whether you’re after a classic photographic feel or simply love the clean, gallery-ready look of a C-type print, this process brings a timeless, professional edge to any space.
